Installation Appears to Hang at 99 Percent

On computers where Visual Studio is installed a delay of one to ten minutes can happen when the install is nearly complete while the documentation is integrated into the Visual Studio Help Collection. Unfortunately, this action isn't deferrable and no feedback is available indicating it is going on. The installation will eventually complete and help will be available immediately.

Unable to Complete the Installation

If you run into a situation when attempting to install Gibraltar that the installation doesn't complete, either reporting that it was interrupted before it could finish or just reporting that it failed, try the following:

  • Make sure the install file is valid: All Gibraltar installations are digitally signed by eSymmetrix, Inc. You should be able to verify the digital certificate by selecting the MSI file and viewing its properties. If there is no Digital Signatures tab, the file is likely a partial download. Likewise, if you receive a warning at the start of the installation that the file is not digitally signed then it is either corrupt or not a real Gibraltar installation.
  • Make sure prior versions are uninstalled: The installation will attempt to upgrade any existing installation, however this often fails and causes it to roll back. We are researching this issue and intend to address it in a future release.
  • Make sure Visual Studio help is not running: The installation will attempt to integrate with the Visual Studio 2008 Help system. This integration can have trouble if any instances of the Document Explorer are running. Often it will work in this scenario (but no help will be available until all copies of the Document Explorer have exited) but this may cause the installation to fail.

Unable to Start the Gibraltar Analyst

If the installation has completed successfully but the Gibraltar Analyst will not start, please try the following:

  • Verify .NET 2.0 Service Pack 1 or later is installed: The Gibraltar Agent and Analyst both require at least Service Pack 1 for .NET 2.0. If run on a computer with .NET 2.0 but not Service Pack 1 they will fail to load correctly, typically causing the .NET Runtime to report a fatal error.
  • Verify the minimum operating system requirements are met: The Gibraltar Analyst is not supported on Windows 2000 or older variants of Windows. It is not supported under Mono.
